Hydrosol is perhaps one of our more niche products, but it’s also one of our most versatile, and in a way most simple items. If you’ve ever used or heard of rose water, apply the same concept to a variety of plants.
Think rosemary water, lavender water, cucumber water. The blanket term for these is called “hydrosols”, and they each contain different properties based on the plant itself. Rosemary is great for mental clarity and hair growth, lavender is of course very soothing and relaxing, cucumber is an astringent and perfect for after-sun useage.
It might seem intimidating, but really it can be used so simply. Spray it directly on your face. You can also use it instead of water for face masks, and you can also use it to flavor drinks. It is just plant water, after all.
We source our hydrosols from Star Bright Farm, a local lavender farm up in White Hall, Maryland. While they specialize in lavender, they have a whole lot of other plants they grow on the farm, and are able to use their traditional copper distiller to take their fresh plants and turn it into Hydrosol right there on the property. This is actually how I learned that essentials are made during the distillation process, and is actually technically a byproduct of making Hydrosol!
The oil sits on the top in a thin layer, and the rest is fresh, fragrant plant water. Essential oils can be a bit concentrated for those that are more sensitive, and Hydrosol can be a gentler way to get a plant’s benefits, especially since essential oils should be diluted before applying to the skin, and shouldn’t be ingested.
