Brand Bios: Crayon Rocks

Not just for kids, crayon rocks can be used by adults too ~ blend colors, create line work & fine details, even brush finished creations with your hand to create a ‘pastel-quality’ finish on your pieces!

Made from soy wax & vegetable dyes for a nontoxic coloring experience.

Before writing their names, before penning quick letters and doing homework— a child’s first foray into writing is likely to be with a crayon.

Having been a special education teacher for over 20 years, schoolteacher Barbara Lee saw the need for a simple tool that was also accessible to kids experiencing any learning disabilities or developmental delays. So, with some inspiration after attending Jan Olsen’s ‘Handwriting Without Tears’ program, Lee set out to create a crayon that would help children naturally, easily develop the tripod hold that uses the thumb, fore and middle fingers in a triangle formation around the crayon.

The shape of the ‘rocks’ quickly took shape, their tapered point making it hard to grip in a closed fist like a traditional crayon, thus encouraging the proper tripod grip. Not only will these crayons not snap in half like classic Crayolas, developing a strong grip on writing utensils is pivotal in fostering future handwriting skills.

Not just for kids, crayon rocks can be used by adults too ~ blend colors, create line work & fine details, even brush finished creations with your hand to create a ‘pastel-quality’ finish on your pieces!

Instead of using petroleum derived paraffin wax to create her crayons, Lee chose to use US grown soy wax, dyed with natural mineral pigments for a nontoxic crayon that still makes coloring pages pop!

While crayon rocks are suitable for youngins who are hoping to learn a proper hold on writing tools, the size of the rocks can present a potential choking hazard to very young children and should be kept away from anyone under 3, and should always be used under parental supervision.
